Rainy season windshield appointments in Miami.

4.8 on Google 359 reviews on our Miami profile

For about five months a year, South Florida gets most of its rain. A windshield is never set in the rain, so between late May and mid-October the time of day and the spot where the car is parked matter as much as the date you pick.

The season

Three phases, three ways to book

The National Weather Service in Miami puts the median start of the rainy season on May 20 and the median end on October 17, with roughly 70% of the year's rain falling in between. It splits the season into three parts, and each one calls for a slightly different plan.

South Florida rainy-season phases and what they mean for a windshield appointment
PhaseWhat the weather doesHow to book
Late May to early JulyThe stormiest stretch: lightning, damaging gusts and flooding are most likelyMorning slots, or any slot with a garage or a covered parking level
Early July to mid-AugustHotter, with dry spells between stormsThe easiest weeks of the season; shade still helps on a hot afternoon
Late August to mid-OctoberRain swings more, with tropical systems and the first cold frontsWatch the tropics; keep a back-up day in mind, and book early if a crack is spreading

The start and end move every year. Some years the season arrives with one big system, others it creeps in over weeks of rising humidity, with dew points staying above 70°F.

Your part of the county

The rain does not fall evenly

NWS Miami describes a wet season that brings about 35 to 45 inches of rain, most of it over the interior suburbs and the least along the coast. It also notes that summer rain changes a lot from one neighbourhood to the next. A storm can sit over Doral or West Kendall for an hour while Brickell stays dry.

The way the season starts gives a clue about timing. The weather service marks the onset by daily showers and thunderstorms over the land, plus showers at night and in the morning over the Atlantic and Gulf waters. Inland addresses are often clearest in the morning. On the beach side, one of those ocean showers can drift ashore early in the day, so we look at the radar with you before settling on a start time there.

None of that is a forecast for your street. It is why we ask where the car will be parked as well as which town you live in.

Covered spots

Cover that works, and cover that does not

  1. A closed garage

The best place in the rainy months. Any storm can roll through and the slot still holds. Tell us the clearance if it is a low condo or apartment level.

  2. An inside level of a parking structure

Works well. The top deck is open sky, so ask for a level with a floor above it.

  3. A carport

Fine when the roof reaches past the front of the car. Wind-driven rain gets under a short carport, so on a stormy day we may still move the time.

  4. A building overhang or drop-off loop

Often a fire lane or a valet lane where cars cannot stay put. Check with the building before booking it.

  5. Under a tree

Not cover. It drips long after the rain stops, and it is the last place to be in lightning.

No cover at all is fine on a dry morning. It just leaves less room if the afternoon turns.

If a storm builds

When a cell forms near the job

  • We do not install a windshield in rain or lightning, on any car, in any spot without cover.
  • The old glass comes out only when there is a clear stretch ahead or the car is under cover. Up to that point, waiting a little or moving the slot is easy and leaves the car exactly as it was.
  • If a storm is heading your way before we arrive, we call to move the appointment, and you choose the new time.
  • Leave the windshield and the frame dry when the technician gets there; skip the car wash that morning.
  • When the job is done, the technician tells you when it is safe to drive and what to avoid on the first day. Humidity and heat change how the bond sets, so there is no fixed number of hours.

Why the fuss

A dry frame is part of the job

A new windshield is held in by urethane bonded to the car's frame, and that bond is part of how the car protects you in a crash. Water on the frame when the glass is set is exactly what the installation rules are there to prevent, which is why a summer downpour moves a Miami appointment rather than the other way round. Our main site has a longer post on how rain, heat and cold affect an install, linked below.

Pick a dry morning slot

Tell us where the car is parked and whether it has cover. Booking requests are taken 24/7 online, and installs run Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6pm.

Rainy season booking questions

Not sure your spot works? Text a photo of where the car parks to (877) 350-5962, or call our Miami line, (305) 677-8371.

Can you replace a windshield in the rain in Miami?

Not out in the open. We only set a windshield when the frame can stay dry, which means a dry spell or a covered spot such as a garage or an inside parking level. If rain or lightning is coming, we move the time.

Is a morning appointment better in the summer?

Usually, for inland addresses. NWS Miami describes a wet season built around daily storms over land, and those tend to build later in the day. On the beach side, a morning shower off the ocean can drift ashore, so ask us when you book.

When does the rainy season end in Miami?

The National Weather Service gives a median end date of October 17, but it varies from year to year. Its median start date is May 20.

What if it rains after my new windshield is in?

Rain on the outside of a finished install is normal; the technician tells you what to avoid on the first day and when it is safe to drive. If you notice a leak later, call us: our lifetime workmanship warranty covers our workmanship and defects in the glass we install, for as long as you own the vehicle.

Things change. If something here is out of date, tell us on our Miami line, (305) 677-8371.
